Comment:
Plasmodium falciparum developing schizont in thick film - note rarely seen in peripheral blood except in severe infections, development of all phases following ring form occurs usually in capillaries of viscera. Immature schizont almost fills non enlarged red cell and is forming 8 - 32 merozoites which are small and the pigment is black. Peripheral schizogony can occur in mild infections but usually in areas where immunity is high. The pigment is darker (black) than P. vivax (brown) and coalesces early.
